Son of Harvey Clark & Rhoda (Denison) Martin born on 20 Aug 1846 at Vernon, Oneida Co., NY. Married 27 Jun 1869 to Mary Ellen Church at Bear Lake, PA. He died 31 Dec 1923. They had two children: Millie Maude (1870) and Kenneth Merle (1881).

Civil War Service:
Two days after his sixteenth birthday, he lied about his age and enlisted as a Private on 22 August 1862 listing his birth year as 1844. Mustered into Company B, 146th Infantry Regiment New York on 11 October 1862; which was assigned to the Army of the Potomac. Participated in the Battle of Fredericksburg and the "Mud March" where he likely received his injury, a "rupture" (double hernia) from lifting ammunition boxes. He would suffer from this injury his entire life. Received a disability discharge Company B, 146th Infantry Regiment New York on 11 March 1863 at Falmouth, VA.

He kept a journal of the year 1890 describing Pennsylvania farm life including the near-death of his daughter Millie during the 1889-90 Russian Flu (the grip) epidemic and then her marriage to Will Burch. He also mentions stopping by the Pension Office to pick up a new truss.

He and wife Mary celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 27 June 1919.

He passed away never seeing 1924, dying on New Years Eve.

Gilbert E. Martin died at his home two miles south of Bear Lake, Pa., at 7 p.m. December 31st, at the age of 77 years, 4 months and 11 days. His death followed a lingering illness. Mr. Martin leaves a wife, Mary Church Martin, one daughter, Mrs. Millie Burch, of Spring Creek, a son, Kenneth Martin, two grandchildren, Ralph and Marie Martin, all of Bear Lake, a brother, Fred Martin, of Syracuse, N.Y., and a sister, Mrs. Irvin Dennison, of Rome, N.Y.

He was a veteran of the Civil War, Co. B, 146th Regiment, N.Y.V.I.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 3rd, at the home. Interment will be in Bear Lake cemetery.
