Kelly Tilson McKee, M.D., Professor Emeritus at the Medical University of South Carolina, died peacefully at MUSC Hospital, October 10, 2008. Dr. McKee was born March 9, 1916 in Bristol, Tennessee. He received his BA degree from Emory and Henry College in 1938, and his M.D. from the University of Virginia in 1941, where he was a member of AOA and the Raven Society. An internship at Cincinnati General Hospital in 1941-1942 was followed by a fellowship in Cardiology at the University of Virginia in 1942-1943. After 3 years as a Medical Officer in the U.S. Navy, he returned to the University of Virginia as a fellow in Allergy in 1946-1947, then as a resident in Internal Medicine during 1947-1948. Dr. McKee came to Charleston as Chief Medical Resident and Teaching Fellow at Roper Hospital in 1948, joining the faculty at the Medical College of South Carolina as Assistant, Associate, and Professor of Medicine from 1949-1987. He served as acting Chairman of the Department of Medicine from 1967-1970. Following retirement in 1988, he continued to work in the Department of Internal Medicine until 2003. His career as a physician and teacher at the Medical University in Charleston spanned 54 years. He was a member of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gladys (Sandy) Harvath McKee and their two sons, Kelly Tilson McKee, Jr., M.D., M.P.H., of Chapel Hill, NC and Thomas Wray McKee, M.D. of Savannah, GA; five grandchildren: Leslie Margaret McKee and Kelly Elizabeth McKee of Fayetteville, NC and Mary Ellen Darr McKee, Thomas Wray McKee, Jr. and William Kelly McKee of Savannah, GA; his sisters: Elizabeth McKee Kemble of Bristol, TN and Anne McKee Coulbourne of Charleston, SC. He was preceded in death by his parents David Tilson McKee and Mary Kelly McKee of Bristol, TN and his brother, David Smythe McKee, M.D. of Atlanta, GA. The family will receive friends at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street, Sunday, October 12, 2008 between five and seven o'clock. A private service will be held in Magnolia Cemetery.
