"Doreen Ness, age 90, of Northfield, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, May 15, 2013, at Northfield Retirement Community.
"Doreen Roselle Dale Ness was born Feb. 4, 1923, in Howard, S.D., to Anton and Sophia (Sanderson) Dale. She was raised on the family farm and graduated from Howard High School in 1939. Following her education, she moved to Northfield and began working in the business office at St. Olaf College. While working at St. Olaf she met her future husband, Stanley L. Ness. They married on June 26, 1948, at St. John's Lutheran Church. After marriage, Doreen worked with Stan until devoting her time to being at home with the children. Over the years Doreen was always an active volunteer. Her involvement included the Northfield Hospital Auxiliary, P.E.O., St. John's Circle, choir and WELCA, PTA, and many hours with the Northfield schools. Prior to his death on June 23, 1996, she and Stan spent many winters at their home in Sun City, Ariz. Doreen was a resident at Northfield Retirement Community for the past 12 years, and she was a longtime member of Sons of Norway. She was very social, a "people person," and had a strong Christian faith. She loved to visit, never had a bad word to say, and was always smiling. She will be missed.
"Survivors include her children, Dale and wife Linda, Brad and wife Kathy, Carol Babel, all of Northfield, Kari of St. Paul; eight grandchildren, Sara (Terrence) Flynn, Chris Blomberg, Laura (Nick) Thom, Krista (Tim) Mullen, Anders (Stephanie) Ness, Julien Babel, Alec Babel, Maren Babel; three great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Timothy Flynn and Charlie Mullen; her brother, Donald (Dorothy) Dale of Moorhead; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley in 1996; her brothers, Stuart and Richard Dale; and her sister, Genevieve Trooien.
"Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, May 20, 2013, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Northfield with the Rev. John Quam officiating. Music will be provided by Cathy Rodland. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Sara Flynn, Chris Blomberg, Laura Thom, Krista Mullen, Anders Ness, Julien Babel, Alec Babel, Maren Babel, Mackenzie Flynn and Timothy Flynn. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Benson & Langehough Funeral Home. Visitation will continue at the church on Monday one hour prior to the funeral. Memorials are preferred to the Stanley & Doreen Ness Scholarship at St. Olaf College, St. John's Lutheran Church or the Northfield Retirement Community.
