Mabel L. Appleton, 79, Civic Leader in Virginia
Mabel L. Appleton, 79, a lifelong resident of the Arlington-Alexandria area and an active civic leader, was pronounced dead at Arlington Hospital Monday following an apparent heart attack. A native of Alexandria, Mrs. Appleton had spent her later years living in Arlington and St. Petersburg Fla. In Arlington she lived at 222 N. George Mason Dr. She was a past president of the James Monroe Elementary School, PTA, the Thomas Jefferson Junior High School PTA, and the Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church and Fairfax Council of the PTA; an organizer of the Mothers Club of the George Washington Chapter of the DoMolay, the Job's Daughters Bethel No. 1 and a new Bethel No. 20 in South Arlington. Both Bethel groups were organized with the aid of members of Chapter No. 50 of the Order of the Eastern Star, to which Mrs. Appleton belonged for more than 45 years. Mrs. Appleton is survived by four children. Francis Spindle of Trenton, NJ, Shirley A. Gamache of Odenton, Md., Frederick Appleton of Rockport, Tex., and Robert Appleton of St. Petersburg, Fla; a stepson, George Appleton of Arlington, and nine grandchildren.
