David I. Murphey enlisted at the age of 21 on June 2, 1861 at Jackson, Tenn. as a Pvt. in Co E, 12th Reg't Tennessee Volunteers. David was promoted to Corporal then on May 8, 1862 during reorganization Co. E of the the 12th Tennessee was transfered to Co. L of the 3rd Kentucky Infantry under Col. A. P. Thompson. They were mounted in 1864 and it became Co. L, 3rd Kentucky Mounted Infantry fighting with General Forrest.
After the war in 1865 he married Sarah C. (Stone) Murphy in Tenn., later they came to Texas and farmed.
