Born on the family farm in northern Tennessee, to Dolly F. and Freely S. Bandy, he was the youngest child, with three older brothers and a sister: Elmer, Olie, Gertie, and Floyd. He grew up in Scottsville, Kentucky, and after graduating from high school, he worked for American Bakeries in Florida, driving a delivery truck and later as a shipping superintendent. In 1940, he joined the US Navy, serving as a tail gunner and radioman on a TBF Torpedo Bomber in the Pacific during World War II. He would later also serve in the US Navy during the Korean War. Just before his deployment to the Pacific in 1944, he met his future wife, Marge, at church; they corresponded during his deployment, and upon his return, they were married in May 1945. Following the war, Carl worked as a photographer in Lake City, Iowa. In 1957, he came to Kotzebue, Alaska, to work for the Federal Aviation Administration. Carl and Margie moved to Delta Junction, Alaska in 1959. They were foster parents for several young teenagers, helping each to finish high school. Carl started the Delta Chapter of the Kiwanis Club, and was a member of the Clearwater Baptist Church, while still working for the FAA. He and Margie have a daughter, Patricia Bandy Simpson, currently living in Kentucky. Patricia is married to Robert Simpson, and they have two children: Mark and Tim. (Bio by Kit and Morgan Benson)
