Norma was born in the Town of Schleswig on June 14, 1904, a daughter of the late David and Augusta (Eick) Laux. She attended Millhome Elementary School, graduated from Kiel High School in 1923, Manitowoc County Normal School in 1924 and Oshkosh College in 1960. Norma began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Elder Grove and for many years taught as an elementary teacher at Manitowoc County, Newton, Schwartzwald and Elkhart Lake schools. On Oct. 8, 1932, She married George Koene at St. John's UCC in Schwartzwald. George preceded her in death on May 16, 1980. Norma was a teacher for 38 years in Sheboygan and Manitowoc counties.
Norma was very active in the Historical Research Center in Sheboygan County, Landmarks, Ltd., Birthday Bridge Club and was a member of AARP and a charter member of the Sheboygan County Retired Teachers Assn. She coached six Sheboygan County spelling champions and one state champion. Other memberships included: Sheboygan County Genealogical Society and the Sheboygan Historical Society.
Survivors include two grandchildren, Noreen (Jeff) Smith of Neenah and David Koene of Madison and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Wayne, and two sisters.
