Bishop Brondel was born in Bruges, West Flanders, Belgium. His father, Charles Joseph Brondel was a chair manufacturer. There were five sons and two daughters in the family. He studied first under the Xaverian brothers, then at the college of St. Louis at Bruges. He was ordained a priest December 17, 1861. He came to America and was attached to the diocese of Nisqually, Washington. Thereafter he was stationed at Walla Walla. He was appointed administrator of Montana in April 1883. In May of the 1884 the diocese of Montana was created and he became its bishop. Bishop Brondel passed away at St. John's Hospital, Helena after a brief illness; fatty degeneration of the heart was the cause of death. Father Brondel was the first Bishop of Helena, Montana. On November 6, 1903, the following was purchased from Herrmann & Co. Funeral Home: one 6/3 State Broad Cloth Casket with copper plated lining, engraved name plate and outside box $250.00, embalming $100.00, two boxes candles $2.00, one dozen pair gloves $1.50, "Interment at Cathedral Vault", total charge $353.50.

Moved to Resurrection Cemetery November 3, 1921, block St. Michael.
