In 1856, John was a founding member and organizers of the New Prospect Church (now Apison Baptist), in Apison, James County, Tennessee. In 1859, John was one of the organizers and founders of the Ocoee Baptist Association.
According to his obituary, John was a Confederate veteran and a member of the Ringgold, GA, Masonic lodge. He was an active Baptist minister for thirty-five years.
John was married four times: 1) Setira E. YORK; 2) Charlotte GOODNER; 3) Mahala Adeline Edgmon; and 4) Zana A. Rogers.
