Born in Western Pennsylvania, Dave claimed to have played baseball for the Washington Senators where he broke his hand catching a ball from Walter Johnson and never played baseball again. He came to Texas as a roustabout, the bottom rung laborer in the oil patch, with his brother, Hugh. Dave met Victoria "Torie" Monk Robertson who was a divorcee with three children: James Robertson, Lucille Robertson Holden and Mary Robertson Harding. Torie became Postmistress of Olden in Eastland County Texas on January 8, 1926. It is thought that Torie was the first postmistress west of the Mississippi. Dave and Torie had one child, Vela Grace "Grace" Vermillion Montgomery, born on June 30, 1926 who married Joseph Edward "Monty" Montgomery in June, 1946 and had one son, Barry Douglas Montgomery on Sept 1, 1949.
