James Abbott "Jimmy" Williams, beloved husband, father and friend, went home to be with the Lord Oct. 3, 2008, at the age of 80. Born April 7, 1928, to James Henry and Mary Anna Williams in Matagorda County, the family soon moved to San Antonio where James grew up, went to school and went to work as a carpenter. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1950-1952, returning in October 1952. In 1953, he married the love of his life for 55 years, Joan DeSha of San Antonio. They have two children, Jerry Lee and Julie Ann.

The family moved to Boerne in 1966 with Joan's parents, Doris and William Sydney Cunningham, where James built the first of three houses. It seemed that James was always building something! He worked as a carpenter and construction foreman and many of the buildings in San Antonio, such as the Methodist Hospital, were the fruit of his labors. The last 20 years of his career he worked for Bartlett Cocke Jr. Construction Company from which he retired in 1991.

James came to know the Lord when he was 20 and never ceased to serve Him all his life, as lay minister and song leader, Sunday school teacher and deacon, and in work clothes, using his carpenter skills to build buildings, pour concrete and oversee construction for the churches he loved. He loved to lead congregational worship music and direct choirs, and he served three churches doing just that - at Rayburn Drive Baptist in San Antonio, First Baptist of Boerne, and Hill Country Baptist, a church started in James' and Joan's own home.

James enjoyed working on old cars, spending many of his last days rebuilding them and trading them. He loved to watch old movies and read about historic places, particularly anything to do with Biblical archaeology. James always made time for family and old friends, and he loved to get together for reunions and eats!

James is survived by his wife, Joan Williams; his children, Jerry Lee Williams of San Antonio and Julie Ann Hanson and husband Kerry of Mansfield; two grandchildren, Dane and Barrett Adix of Mansfield; sister Janie Dickson and husband Don of Seguin; nephew Loy Edson and niece Donna Laubach; and other loving family members and friends.

James will indeed be missed by all who knew him, his gentle humor and quiet strength. Visitation will be held Friday, Oct. 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Vaughan's Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, at 10 a.m. at The First Baptist Church followed by burial at the Boerne Cemetery. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to A-Med Community Hospice.
