CLAYTON -- Allene Ellis Hockaday , 91, died Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at The Brian Center, Clayton. She was born in Harnett County on October 28, 1915 to the late Ezra and Norma Ellis and was married to the late Erwin Duke Hockaday , Sr. who preceded her in death on July 9, 1981. Before retiring to The Brian Center, five years ago, Allene lived in the home place on Amelia Church Road in Clayton. The Brian Center became her new home and she loved it and the staff. She was awarded a "Welcome Greeter" pin by the Brian Center which she proudly wore as she walked the halls greeting patients and families and delivering mail to the residents. She was also nominated "Miss Sunshine" during her stay there.

The family thanks the staff at The Brian Center for their compassionate and unfailing love and care of their Mother during her time there and especially over the past two weeks. Allene was a member of Amelia Christian Church and loved her Lord and Saviour and awaited his welcoming her to her eternal home.

Surviving are daughters, Patricia H. Waters and husband, Franklin of Clayton, Janiffa H. Allen and husband, Jerry of Clayton and Marsha H. Bourne of Texas; son, Erwin Duke Hockaday , Jr. and wife, Florence of Clayton. She is also survived by granddaughters, Cathy Waters Whitley and husband, Jay of Winston-Salem, Vicki Waters Harris of Garner and Gina Adams Odom and husband, Ronnie of Florida; grandsons, David E. Hockaday and wife, Debbie of Zebulon and Timothy D. Hockaday of Clayton; one great-granddaughter, Jennifer W. Ward and husband, Dave of Charlotte; five great-grandsons, Brandon Whitley of Winston-Salem, Tyler and Garrett Parrish of Clayton, Chris Hockaday of Tennessee and Brandon Hockaday of Raleigh. She is also survived by her sisters, Melba E. Aiken of Clayton, Muriel E. Penny of Clayton and Joyce E. Avery and husband Sam of Clayton. In addition to her parents and husband, Allene was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Keith Debord at the McLaurin Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, December 30, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, Clayton.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on Friday evening, December 29, 2006 at McLaurin Funeral Home, Clayton; and other times at the home of Patricia and Franklin Waters, 253 Corbett Road, Clayton, NC .

Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made in her memory to the Building Fund at Amelia Christian Church.
