Aged 70 years

Survived by his wife; sons Wallace, Frank and Albert; daughters Ida, Gertrude and Helen Hoge. Born in Pennsylvania, then lived in Ohio for 18 years, then to Missouri until 1888 and then to Clinton, IL, until 1896 when he came to Springfield. Was city clerk in California, Missouri and later was sheriff of Moniteau county for two terms. Later was circuit clerk and county clerk of Moniteau county and then postmaster of California, Missouri for 14 years.

During the Civil war, he was captain of a company of home guards.

"In this time and during his incumbency of the office of postmaster, he was considerably harassed by the notorious James boys." IL State Journal, Springfield, IL, 9-29-1902
