J. Doy Akins, 84, died Sunday afternoon at his residence near Statesboro after a brief illness.
A bulloch County native, Mr. Akins lived near Statesboro all his life and was retired from the Central of Georgia Railroad. He was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Akins is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Fay A. Morris, Jacksonville, FL, and Mrs. Shirley A. Smith, Tifton; three sisters; Mrs. Pete Cannon, Mrs. Max Edenfield, and Mrs. George Mallard, all of Statesboro; two brothers, Inman Akins, and Ernest Akins, both of Statesboro; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held today at 3 p.m. at the chapel of the Smith-Tillman Mortuary with the Rev. James Barnes officiating. Burial will be in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
The body will remain in the chapel of the mortuary until the funeral hour.
Smith-Tillman Mortuary of Statesboro is in charge of the arrangements.
