Police Officer. Domestic Terror Victim. Brian V. McDonnell was a Sergeant with the San Francisco Police Department when he was killed by shrapnel from a pipe bomb (which consisted of heavy metal staples and lead bullets) that was set on a ledge at the San Francisco Police Department on February 16, 1970. As other officers tried rendering aid to the fallen sergeant, they could see that he sustained a severed neck artery wound and severe wounds to his eyes and neck. He was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where doctors attempted valiantly to save his life. Officer McDonnell died of his injuries two days later on February 18, 1970. While no group has ever claimed responsibility for the bombing, the Weathermen, lead at the time by William Ayers, is one of two groups that was initially investigated for the murder. Officer McDonnell was laid to rest on February 20th, 1970.
