Civil War Union Soldier. Twenty-one year old James H. Riggin was a Private of Battery F of the 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery - Ricketts' Battery. On July 2, 1863, during the Battle of Gettysburg, this gallant young volunteer soldier, while acting as the guidon bearer, was "shot through the body" while defending the guidon from capture by a Confederate officer.
