William Wallace Towles was the youngest of four brothers, the sons of John Culbreath Towles of Chambers County, Alabama, who joined the Army of the Confederate States of America and fought in the Late Unpleasantness Between the States.

William served in Company E, 14th Alabama Infantry Regiment. He survived the war and filed with the State of Alabama for his Confederate pension in 1907.

"Uncle Bill" Towles Dies in LaGrange, Ga.

William Towles, otherwise and familiarly known in LaFayette and Chambers County as "Uncle Bill" died last night at the home of his grandson, J. T. Nichols, according to a report from LaGrange today.

Funeral arrangements have been made with the funeral to be held at the home of J. T. Nichols, LaGrange, Thursday afternoon at 2:30. Interment will be in the West Point, Ga., cemetery.

"Uncle Bill" was a well known and respected citizen of Chambers County, having many friends here who will regret to learn the sad news.

W. W. Towles' Funeral Held Last Thursday

Mr. William Wallace Towles, noted Confederate veteran, and grandfather of J. T. Nichols, of 621 Greenville Street, [La Grange, Georgia] died at Mr. Nichols' residence, where he has been residing, Tuesday night at 11 o'clock. Mr. Towles, who was 84 years of age, succumbed after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held from Mr. Nichols' residence Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with Rev. C. O. English, pastor of the Second Baptist Church, officiating. Interment followed in the [Pinewood] cemetery at West Point [Troup County, Georgia], with Hunter & Owen, funeral directors, in charge.

William Wallace Towles was born in LaFayette, Chambers County, Alabama, November 28, 1842. Growing up in LaFayette, he received his education in the schools of that city and at the age of 19 enlisted in the Confederate army, in which he served with distinction and fidelity for the four years' duration of the War Between the States. He was a member of the Fourteenth Alabama [Infantry] Regiment, Company E, and served under General Morgan Anderson, who held a command under General Robert E. Lee's personal command.

Returning from the war at its close in 1865, Mr. Towles resided in LaFayette until about a year ago, when declining health and old age forced him to remove to the home of his grandson, J. T. Nichols, in LaGrange, where he resided until the time of his death. He was married early in life, but is survived neither by his wife nor children. Surviving grandchildren are: J. T. Nichols, LaGrange; W. B. Nichols, Rome and H. E. Nichols, of West Point. In addition four great-grandchildren survive: Miss Sadie Nichols, of Birmingham; Miss Carolyn Nichols, James Nichols and Harry Nichols, all of Rome. - LaGrange Reporter
