He was the son of Jesse Vowell Tyra and Martha Jane Higgins. He married Rosa Bell Hart November 6, 1881 most likely in Kaufman County, Texas. They were parents of the following children:

R.D. Tyra was born in Mississippi on 15 October 1860. He came to Texas as a child and lived until manhood in Hill County and Kaufman County. He married in 1881 in Kaufman County to Miss Rosa B. Hart. Six children were born into this union one son and five daughters. Two children survived Mr. Tyra, they include - Mrs. Jewel Hogan and Mrs. Minnie Hamilton. The family moved to Young County in 1882 settling near Murray. Mr. Tyra was a Baptist and was buried in the Tyra cemetery.
