Archaeologist, Diplomat. He directed a number of excavations of Biblical sites, including Tel Dan, and from 1974 until his death was professor of archaeology at Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem. After early education in Haifa and at the David Yellin Teachers College in Jerusalem, he worked as a teacher, then attended the University of Pennsylvania; he received his MA in 1934 and doctorate in 1935 from Johns Hopkins University. He then held the Theyer fellowship in archaeology until 1937, working on projects in Israel, Jordan, and Iraq. Under the British Mandate, he held several positions, and served as deputy military governor of Jerusalem. He was Israel's consul general in Los Angeles in the 1950s. From 1961 to 1974, he headed the Israeli Department of Antiquities and Museums; while in that position, he helped negotiate the publication of part of the Dead Sea Scrolls. In 1966, Biran and his team began excavation of Tel Dan, site of the ancient Biblical city of Dan, in northern Israel. This is the place referred to in I Kings 12:28 to 30 as the city where King Jeroboam set up a golden golden calf to be worshipped. The group has never found the calf, but, in 1993, they found and deciphered a stone tablet inscribed in Early Aramaic dating to the 9th century BC; this relic contains the phrase "House of David", the earliest extant reference to King David's family line. They found further evidence dating the settlement to at least the 12th century BC. In 1994 Biran published "Biblical Dan", the story of the dig to that point. In 1984, he was awarded the Shimmel Prize for Archaeology, and in 2002, he received the Israel Prize, Israel's highest honor.
