Pastor John (Johann in German, Jan in Wendish) Kilian, leader of the Wendish-German colony in and around Serbin, Texas.

Son of Peter and Maria (Mättig) Kilian was born Doehlen, near Hochkirch, Saxony. Studied theology at the University of Leipzig.

Pastor Johann Kilian was an intellectual speaking Wendish, Latin, and German. He learned English in Texas.

1848--Married Maria Groeschel in Germany.

1854 Pastor Johann Kilian chartered the ship Ben Nevis and traveled with 600 of his congregation from Germany to England where they sailed for Texas. In Liverpool there was an outbreak of cholera, and they lost many of their number. Arriving in Galveston, Texas, they went to Houston and walked 85 miles from Houston to Austin County, finally settling in Lee County.

Pastor Kilian's little daughter died shortly after arrival and was the first to be buried in the Serbin Cemetery.

Pastor Kilian brought the Bronze Bell from his homeland church on the voyage to Texas. The bell is now on the Campus of Concordia University in Austin. Concordia's main building is Kilian Hall.

JOHANN KILIAN served as Pastor at Serbin, using Wendish and German, for thirty years. For the first ten years he also made regular visits to the New Ulm area in order to minister to a group of his immigrants who had settled there, and he sporadically served German Lutherans at Bastrop and surrounding communities. He taught the parochial school at Serbin for twelve years.
