Mr. Bowman was a son of the late Anderson and Carrie Bowman of the Siloam section. He came to this city some forty years ago and built up quite a fortune.
For many years he engaged in the wholesale and retail mercantile business, during which time he acquired considerable real estate and other holdings, owning at the time of his death about 140 houses and tracts of land. He was interested in many of the financial institutions of the country and at the time of his death was vice president of the Surry County Loan and Trust Co, director and member of the loan committee of the Workmen's Building and Loan Association, stockholder in the First National Bank and a director of the Bank of Mount Airy. For several years he was on the board of town commissioners.
Mr. Bowman was a man of kind disposition and always showed a lenient spirit toward those with whom he had business dealings. It was during the depression years of 1931 and 1932 that he found many of his tenants unable to pay their rent. Realizing the dire distress many of them were in he called them to his office just before Christmas of 1932 and remitted all past due rent they owed him and started all of his tenants out on an even slate. At that time with one stroke of the pen he had wiped out $3200 rents that were due him.
He was married some years ago to Mrs. Permelia Stone Bowman, widow of his brother, who died many years ago. Their son Charles W. Bowman passed away in 1929.
He is survived by the family of his stepson Mrs. W.R. Bowman, Miss Lucy Bowman, and Mr. Welch Bowman, his nieces Miss Martha Stone, who made her home with Mr. Bowman, Mrs. J. Caudle, Mrs. Rual Caudle; three sisters in law Madames Walter Bowman, John Boamen and Matt Bowman; three aunts, Mrs. Sarah Montgomery, Mrs. Nancy Bolt, Mrs. Eliza Newman, four nephews Ernest Bowman, Early Bowman, George Bowman and John Bowman.
