Sonnie was a graduate of Meadville High School. She was employed by Musser Forest for 38 years as a payroll and office clerk.
Sonnie was a former member of the New Life Lutheran Church and the Indiana Chapter of the Eastern Star and past Worthy Matron. In her spare time, she had a variety of interests, including growing cacti and subtropical plants in the solarium. While outdoors, she enjoyed tending to her flower beds and shrubs.
Traveling was also a passion of Sonnie's. She traveled the four countries of the United Kingdom, Italy and Switzerland. Sonnie and her husband enjoyed many trips to the western National Parks and Denali National Park in Alaska. Her most memorable trip was to view the magnificent polar bears on the frozen tundra of Churchill, Manitoba.
She and Tom also vacationed many winters in Aruba and the Dominican Republic. On her travels, Sonnie always shared hand-crafted tokens with everyone she encountered. She never met a stranger.
Sonnie was inducted into the Mount Nittany Society for her philanthropy. She and Tom made significant donations to the Penn State Agricultural Science Scholarship Fund. As a result of their donations, 22 students from Indiana and surrounding counties received scholarships in agricultural science.
Sonnie was preceded in death by her parents and two sons, Thomas Jr. and John Russell.
Friends will be received on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the John A. Lefdahl Funeral Home, Indiana. An additional hour of viewing will be held Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the New Life Lutheran Church, Dixonville, with service to immediately follow. The Rev. Stephen Bond will officiate.
Interment will follow in the Grove Chapel Cemetery.
