Toni Butler
Proud and happy mother and wife, gourmet cook

During the last few years of her life, while she was battling breast cancer, former Claremont resident Toni Elizabeth Butler valued her time and accomplished many of her life goals. She wasn't striving for a promotion; she didn't need to write a book; she didn't need to travel around the globe. Ms. Butler's goals were simple, all-important and had everything to do with love.

"For Toni, it was being a wife and a mom. She didn't have a huge career she was chasing or anything of those sorts of things," explained her husband, George Butler. "We were just regular people and it was enough to be together and to have a really wonderful home and be with our wonderful daughters."

Ms. Butler, who grew up in Claremont and graduated from Claremont High School in 1973, died of breast cancer at her Arizona home on June 15, 2008. Her husband, George Butler, and her parents were by her side. She was 52.

Born in Cortez, Colorado on July 16, 1955, a childhood move with her family brought Ms. Butler to Claremont. In 1975, she married George Butler at the Claremont Presbyterian Church. The two met at a Claremont High School sock hop dance in 1971 and have "been inseparable ever since," shared the family.

In 1985, Ms. Butler moved to Mesa, Arizona, enjoying life with her husband and raising children in a beautiful suburb 3 miles from Mr. Butler's work.

"Toni was a kind, sensitive and dedicated mother and a dear wife who put everyone before herself," wrote Mr. Butler in a remembrance.

According to the family, she was never afraid to die and thoroughly prepared herself for the journey. She never liked the idea of saying "goodbye," but, rather, embraced the classic Roy Rogers theme song lyrics, "Happy trails to you, until we meet again."

"Toni insists that we will all meet again in heaven," wrote her husband.

Ms. Butler was a creative artist, an avid reader and a gourmet cook. A subscriber to Gourmet Magazine, she wasn't choosy about experimenting and cooked everything "from cakes to stew to stuffed chicken: you name it," said Mr. Butler. During the last few years, she sat at the kitchen counter while her husband cooked, guiding him through the recipes. Her mantra of encouragement to him became, "Just follow the instructions."

She was very proud of her 2 daughters, now age 22 and 26, both of whom graduated from college with honors. She was also pleased to celebrate her oldest daughter's marriage. And, for Ms. Butler, a great conversation over a glass of chardonnay with family or friends was a joy.

"Toni's passing will have a profound effect on all those who shared in her life," wrote her husband.

Ms. Butler is survived by her husband, George H. Butler, III; by her daughter and son-in-law, Alison Marie and Christopher J. Jones; by her daughter, Kathryn Grace Butler; by her parents, James Edward Campbell, Sr. and Betty Ann Campbell; by her brother and sister-in-law, James E. Campbell, Jr. and Debbie Campbell; and by her nephew, Alan Campbell.

A celebration of life was held on June 22, 2008 at the Butler residence in Mesa, Arizona.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.

The family wishes to offer their deepest gratitude to the hospice caregivers who "provided Ms. Butler and her family love, care and guidance during this heartfelt and emotional time."
