Received Doctor of Divinity (D.D.) degree from Emory College of Oxford, GA, in 1887. He married Virginia L. Venable on December 10, 1851. He was Leon County Superintendent of Public Instruction in 1872 and by virtue of that office was also a Trustee of the West Florida Seminary (precursor to today's Florida State University). During his time in Tallahassee, he was the minister at Trinity Methodist Church, serving two stints (1855/56 & 1872-750. Source: William G. Dodd's "A History of the West Florida Seminary" and the 1872 Florida Supt. of Public Instruction Annual Report, and Trinity Records. By the late 1880s, he was affiliated with the "Florida Christian Advocate" newspaper in Leesburg.
