Clarence J. "Sparky" Neis, 90, of 1015 E. Willcox Ave. died at 6:07 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 1992, at his residence.

Born June 24, 1901, in Mount Carroll to George and Caroline Wurster Neis, he married Edna I. Itnyre on Sept. 25, 1926, in Sterling. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth M. (Martha Lou) Johnson of rural Edelstein; two brothers, Glen of Itasca and Lloyd of Midfield, Ala.; one sister, Mrs. George (Ruth) Davis of Sterling; six grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers.

He came to Peoria in 1925 as manager of the Merchants & Manufacturers Association Employment Agency.

He later served as treasurer of the Peoria Barge Terminal from 1929 until retiring in 1971. A graduate of Brown's Business College in Sterling, he served in the National Guard from 1927 to 1933. He was a Meals on Wheels volunteer for 10 years, and a member of the Fort Clark Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons.

He was a member of Temple Masonic Lodge 46, AF&AM; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Peoria; and the Mohammed Temple, Shrine, and its Senior Nobles and Senior Masons.

He also was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served as school treasurer for 25 years and was active in the JOY Class.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at his church. The Rev. John H. Stanley will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wilton Mortuary. Private graveside services will be held Wednesday at Lawn Ridge Cemetery in Speer.
