Sylvester Boyls was born in February of 1846 to William Carroll and Malinda Scarborough Boyles of Perry County, Alabama. Siblings Elizabeth Mary, Margaret, John W, and William Parron completed the family members.
At seventeen, he enlisted in Mississippi's 5th Infantry and was captured by Union soldiers during the Battle of Franklin. Detained for 18 months at Camp Douglas in Chicago, his release came at the end of the Civil War in 1865.
Mary Catharine "Kitty" Satterfield and Sylvester wed January 17, 1872, in Kemper, Mississippi. Six children were born during their union which lasted 36 years. Sylvester died on November 1, 1908, in Floresville, Texas, at the age of 62.
