Jacob Hites, Sr., of Philadelphia County, was an early settler of Cussewago Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, in 1798. He was the son of Col. Jacob Woolcomber Hite and Catherine (O'Bannon) Hite. He married Hannah Carpenter. They gave birth to four children: Jacob Hites Jr. (1786–1865), Katherine Kitty (Hites) Allee (1789–1872), David M. Hites, Sr. (1792–1874) and Joseph Hites.
Jacob Hites, Jr., his son, settled in what is now Hayfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania in 1812. He married Mary Lewis. (She was a daughter of George Lewis, who came to Meadville in 1800, settled in Cussewago Township in 1801, and died there in 1802.) Jacob Hites, Jr., and Mary (Lewis) Hites had nine children.
