NORMA LEE (STAAB) DANIELS, age 78, of Valley Center, Kan., beloved wife, mother, grandmother, passed peacefully to eternal life with all her family by her side on Saturday, Sept. 13. Born July 6, 1930, in Yates Center to Leo and Ruth Staab, she was raised in Kansas City, MO, and graduated from Bishop Hogan High School in 1948. She earned her Registered Nurse Diploma from St. Mary`s School of Nursing in Kansas City. While working as an obstetrics RN at St. Mary`s Hospital, she met Dr. Robert M. Daniels, whom she married Nov. 27, 1954. She and Robert made Valley Center their home in 1955, where they raised their seven children. Norma devoted immeasurable time, energy, and enthusiasm to serving her family, her community, and her church. In 1974, she was elected to the Valley Center City Council, where she served as a councilwoman for six years. As a councilwoman, Norma initiated and led Valley Center`s 1976 Bicentennial Celebration. In 1980, she was elected to the Kansas Senate, 31st District, as the first female Senator from Sedgwick County. Norma had the honor of serving the people of Kansas for three consecutive terms. During her tenure as a senator she served on numerous boards and commissions, including the Presidential appointment to the Kansas Rural Development Council. Norma generously gave her time and talents to serving others. She was a 54-year member of St. Jude Catholic Church, where she volunteered as a CCD teacher. She was a charter member of the Valley Center Swim Club and the Valley Center Historical Society. She was an avid supporter of Valley Center Schools, especially its fine arts programs. She touched many lives with her positive energy, her gentle spirit, and her immeasurable faith in God. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Ruth Staab, three sisters - Delores Shay, Shirley Hirt, Carolyn Laird, and two sons, David and Peter. She is survived by her sister Angela Kohl of Kansas City, husband, Dr. Robert M. Daniels of the home, a son, Robert M. Daniels II and wife Deborah of Valley Center, Ks, and six daughters, Mary Porter, Kathryn Daniels, Jeanne Daniels, Dr. Patricia Petrakis, and Peggy Marisa Daniels, all of Valley Center, and Sr. Susanne Daniels, CSJ, Wichita, Ks, 10 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Stepstone % Mission Advancement Office, 3700 E Lincoln, Wichita, 67218. Visitation 5-8 pm Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Baker Funeral Home, 100 S Cedar, Valley Center. Rosary 6 pm, Thursday, Sept. 18; Service 10:30 am, Friday, Sept. 19, both at St. Jude Catholic Church, 3130 Amidon, Wichita, Father Doug Campbell officiating. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Sedgwick, Kan.
