Melvin L. Torkelson, 66, Doland, S. Dak. died Monday, May 19, 1986 at Community Memorial Hospital, Redfield, S. Dak.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 22, 1986 at the United Methodist Church in Doland, S. Dak. at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Kip Roosen officiating. Burial was made at the Doland Cemetery with military graveside rites.
Casket bearers were Kenneth Fortin, Norbert Fortin, Roger Vick, Richard Hendry, Ray Wood and Lee Terveen.
Melvin L. Torkelson was born January 10, 1920 at Frankfort, S. D. to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. (Myrtle Coldren) Torkelson. He attended rural and public grade schools, graduating from Frankfort High School in 1937, obtained employment and moved to Doland, S.D. He married Wilma Wells on May 19, 1940.
Involvement in community activities included service as Doland City Councilman and was Mayor of Doland,, 1955 through 1957. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 69 and the Eastern Spink Lions Club at Doland.
Interested in aviation and a licensed pilot, certified aircraft mechanic for airframe and power plant. Member of the Clark Flying Club and National Experimental Aircraft Association.
He entered the United States Navy, April 26, 1944, and served in the Pacific Theater as Ship's Serviceman C - 3rd Class and was honorably discharged January 4, 1946.
Survivors include his wife, Doland, S.D. one son, Orrin, and wife, Eileen, West Deptford, N.J.; one daughter, Mrs. Janet Nyberg, and husband, Jim; two grandchildren, Brant Jaden, and Brandon Wells, Pavillion, Wyo.; two brothers, Herschel, and wife, Edith, Frankfort, S.D., and Arthur, and wife Julia, Wichita, Kansas, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Delbert, in 1926, at age 4.
