John R. Calcaterra, aka, "Jack", "Large", "The Prince of Park Road", accomplished athlete, long time business owner of the Peter Pan Cafe, teacher, and beloved father and grandfather passed away on Sunday, (September 28, 2008) in his home. He was surrounded by his family doing what he loved, spending time with his grandchildren and watching his favorite pastime, football. He resided at 273 Brittany Farms Road in New Britain, Connecticut at the time of his death.

Jack touched many lives during his 64 years, through athletics as a lineman for the NFL's New York Giants, an All-American 2-way lineman for the Rose Bowl Champion Purdue Boilermakers in 1967, Hula Bowl participant in 1968, an accomplished baseball player (he and his teammates of the New England Region-American Legion Allstars went on to play for a National Championship in 1961). He also played for the Hartford Knights. He was an assistant coach for Hartford Public High School Football team and teacher in the Hartford public school system. He was a graduate of Conard High School and co-captain of the 1961 CCIL championship football team. He was an avid golfer and longtime member of the Rockledge Men's Club. Jack was a coach, mentor, and sponsor to countless youth and community sponsored sports teams.

He was predeceased by his parents, John J. Calcaterra and Mafalda Camarco Calcaterra and "the love of his life" Sherri Miller. He is survived by his son John J. Calcaterra, II; daughter-in-law Claudia Demagistris-Calcaterra; daughters Melissa McMahon, Bethany Bedford and husband Nate Bedford, along with beloved grandchildren Julianna Rose Calcaterra and John J. Calcaterra, III, with whom he loved to color. He also leaves to mourn his sisters Sally Ann Calcaterra and her husband Bruce "Harvey" Harowicz and Donna Caruso and her husband Ronald; his beloved nieces and nephew, Ashley and Amy Furstein, Tara Lynn Patnoe and her husband Joe, and Ernest Caruso. He also leaves his grand nephew and jelly donut eating partner Dante Arroyo, who will miss him on Sunday mornings, and his brother-like wine making partner and cousin George Camarco and his wife Tammy Camarco. His zest for life was expressed in everything he did and left countless smiles in all our memories.
