Little is known about John, he was tried at the Old Bailey for stealing, and arrived on the Admiral Gambier in 1809. John and Ann married in March 1810. John obtained his Ticket of Freedom in 1813, He appears on the 1814 muster as a shoemaker, with a wife and two children. Sadly, John died 5 days before his daughter Hannah was baptised, leaving Ann with three children (Mary, Hannah and Elizabeth Ewing). John's Ticket of Freedom confirms his birthplace as County Mayo, age 29 he was 5ft 2 1/2 tall, dark complexion, dark brown eyes, black hair and it is noted 'good looking'
