A clipping from a letter written by Lessie Mae (Taylor) Meadows to her granddaughter, dated for November 23, 1993:
"…I do want all of you to live in a way that I can be proud of you. I‘m real proud of the job you are doing and hope you will study your bible and find a church you like. I had a hard time finding the one I'm in and deciding to go there, I‘ve never been sorry I did…"
Favorite Memories of Grandmother Meadows:
- Her famous, homemade pecan pie.
- Her delicious fried chicken served with turnip greens, rutabagas, mashed potatoes and dinner rolls.
- Her morning breakfast bacon, the smell that would fill her kitchen, while being fried in the cast iron skillet that her mother-in-law, Mirtie (Mock) Meadows gave to her as a wedding present in 1940. She continued to use this same frying pan, until she passed away in 1997.
- Peeling apples and slicing them with her paring knife for us grandkids, while we watched television.
- Eating in her living room on one of her old TV dinner trays.
- Making us grandkids hot cocoa, before we went to bed at nighttime.
- Reading the story of "Rusty the Painter" at bedtime, over and over again.
- Taking us grandkids swimming at the city pool, as well as to various swimming holes that she knew of from when she was a young girl.
- Going with her to Sacred Harp Singings, hosted at the Old Bethel Church in Babbie, Alabama.
- Picking up pecans from her pecan tree and shelling them on her back porch.
- Playing Monopoly with us grandkids, into the late hours of the night, while seated at her dining room table.
- Listening intently to her tell stories of her childhood and relatives of yesteryear, while spending many hours picture gazing and sharing family history with us.
- Giving us grandkids spoonfuls of straight pancake syrup if we should wake up in the middle of the night, coughing and unable to stop. She said that this was what her mother used to give her for such an annoying cough and to our amazement, it worked!
