Capt. Richard G. Cliff Jr., 29, of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, N.C.; He died Sept. 29 in Yakhchal, Afghanistan, from wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device during mounted operations. Also killed were Sgt. 1st Class Jamie S. Nicholas and Sgt. 1st Class Gary J. Vasquez. There were four Army Commendation Medals, the Army Achievement Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Parachutist Badge, and several others. He was a perfect soldier. Richie made friends with ease, becoming friends with everyone he met. He never had a bad thing to say about anyone. He was driven to succeed and excelled at every endeavor. Richie leaves behind a wife and their new son. He was home for the birth of his first child and deployed soon after. He is survived by his wife, Stacy, who he married in August, 2003, an infant son, Richard, born September 4, 2008, his parents Julie and Rich Cliff, Sr., and a brother, Eddie Cliff. He was killed while serving in Afghanistan.
