Fred C. Counsel Dies; Was Renowned Artist

Fred C. Counsel of 1800 Oak Ave., Eldorado, died at 8 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 1978, in the home of his brother, Eugene of Altoona, with whom he resided, following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Counsel was a world-renowned artist. He was born Jan. 8, 1910, in Altoona, a son of Frank and Florence (Rangdale) Counsel. Surviving are another brother and sister, Arthur of Memphis, Tenn., and Mrs. Irene Sharer of Pinellas Park, Fla.
Mr. Counsel was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The mountainous countryside of Pennsylvania had a great influence on his work. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Museum School of Industrial Arts, Philadelphia; Parson's School of Design, New York City, and School of Fine and Applied Arts, Paris, France.
Mr. Counsel was for many years a local instructor of private classes and also taught in the public schools. Among his workds are those being shown in the Huntingdon Gallery, Cleveland, Ohio; Public Gallery, Washington D.C.; French embassy, Washington, D.C.; Long Harsley Gallery, in England; the Mrs. Harrison Williams collection, the Sax collection and Dwight D. Eisenhower home, Gettysburg. He was listed in "Who's Who In American Art."
He was one of three residents of Altoona to be accorded national recognition by the Society of Arts and Sciences in the list of nominations announced in New York on Oct. 2, 1935, in connection with the society's 1935-36 program. He won first prize for landscape at Long Morsley Tower, England, in 1936.
Other prizes and honors included award for best portrait at the Pittsburgh Allied Artists' show in 1938. He conducted a one-man show at the Georgetown Galleries, Washington, D.C., for two weeks in December 1939, the show composed of watercolors.
He also conducted his first one-man show of paintings, both oils and watercolors, at 10 Gallery, New York City, in October 1941, and a second show there in February 1942. His paintings were landscapes and genre paintings of the Pennsylvania countryside, as well as typical New York scenes. He contributed a watercolor painting, "Winter Houses," to aid in the New York City drive for funds for the American Cancer Society in April 1950.
Friends will be received in Stevens Mortuary from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

COUNSEL--Services for Fred C. Counsel of 5900 Oak Ave., Eldorado, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Memorial Chapel of Stevens Mortuary by the Rev. Harold H. Hayes. Interment in Carson Valley Cemetery. Friends will be received in Stevens Mortuary, 1421 8th Ave., from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
