Mrs. Lawrence Dies on Train - A telegram was received here early yesterday morning from Mrs. Susan Lawrence Dana, announcing the sudden death of her mother, Mrs. Rheuna D. Lawrence. The telegram was sent at 1:15 a.m. at Waycross, Ga., and stated that Mrs. Lawrence died late Saturday evening while en route to Savannah, Ga. Another telegram later in the morning from Mrs. Dana stated that death was caused from cardiacal asthma. The remains are expected to arrive in Springfield on the 9 o'clock Capital City Flyer, on the Chicago & Alton railway, this evening, and they will be taken at once to the family residence, northwest corner of Lawrence avenue and Fourth street.
Mrs. Lawrence's only near surviving relative is her daughter, who was with her at the time of her death. The announcement of Mrs. Lawrence's death came as a great shock to her Springfield acquaintances. She was apparently in the best of health and was en route home by easy stages after an extended trip in the West Indies and the south.
During the latter part of January Mrs. Lawrence and Mrs. Dana left here for New York, and on Feb. 2, they sailed for the West Indies. After a cruise among the islands they debarked at Nassau and visited Palm Beach, Jacksonville and other points of interest in the south, intending to return to Springfield by rail. When the attack came which resulted in Mrs. Lawrence's death the two were en route to Savannah, Ga., where they expected to visit a few days before commencing the trip to Springfield. During the entire trip Mrs. Lawrence was apparently in the best of health. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ridgely of South Fourth street, who have just returned from the south, dined with Mrs. Lawrence and Mrs. Dana last Wednesday, and at that time Mrs. Lawrence was strong and seemed to be greatly enjoying her trip.
The trip home with the remains of her mother will be a particularly sad one for Mrs. Dana. About four years ago, when her husband, Edward Dana, was accidentally killed in a mine accident in Oregon, Mrs. Dana accompanied the remains to Springfield and the trip she is now making will be her second sad journey home with the remains of a loved one.
Mrs. Lawrence was the widow of the late Rheuna D. Lawrence, at one time mayor of Springfield, president of the State National bank, president of the board of education and prominent in Springfield business and social circles. The elegant new residence of Mrs. Lawrence and her daughter, completed last fall, has been the scene of many functions given for charity during the winter. The decedent has been actively engaged in charitable and philanthropic work for years and has always been a leader in the work of the Carrie Post King's Daughters Home for Aged Women, as well as the Home for the Friendless.
