A service of worship will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, September 29, at Westover Church, 505 Muir's Chapel Road, Greensboro. A private interment will be held at New Garden Cemetery at Guilford College.
He was the eldest of six children born to James William and Viola Brown Cummings.
Ralph spent his entire life in Guilford College on the dairy farm that had been in the Cummings family for several generations. He attended N.C. State College and worked building ships and planes during World War II. He returned to the farm developing a herd of pure bred Holsteins at Grassy Meadow Farm with his father. He loved living on the land, watching God's gift of sunshine and rain, and growing the grain to feed the animals. Ralph's life was lived by faith, family, and friends, each a large part of his life. He was interested in the local schools and farm organizations, holding offices in several, including The Grange, of which he was a member for 50 years, the chairman of the board of United Dairies for several years, and church offices. As the city annexed the farms, Ralph retired from farming. He then grew big gardens and lovely roses to share and he enjoyed his tennis games. The family thanks his many "tennis girls" who helped with good exercise and lots of fun.
Ralph grew up in a small country church attended by his family. There he accepted Christ, the Master of his life. He became a charter member of Guilford College Methodist Church, later joining Trinity Church. His love for missions and Westover Church completed his life.
His parents, two brothers, Bill and Raymond, and sister, Myrtle Greeson, are deceased.
Remaining are his wife, Esther, his bride of 66 years; daughter, Brenda, and her husband, Mac Harrell, of Waynesville; son, Ralph "Chip" Cummings, Jr. and wife, Anne, of Greensboro; granddaughter, Elise, and husband, Jason Greene, of Junaluska; granddaughter, Catherine Cummings, of Charlotte; great-granddaughters, Madeline and Caroline Greene. Also surviving are a brother, Ernest "Monk" Cummings and wife, Barbara, of Greensboro; and a sister, Gladys Johnson, of Greensboro.
