Sgt. William E. Hasenflu, 38, of Bradenton, Florida, he served in the United States armed forces for 16 years, nine years in the Navy and seven with the Army. William was so proud to be a United States citizen and loved our country. He joined the Navy after graduating from high school in Meadville, Pennsylvania, where he grew up. When that enlistment was done, he served in the Navy Reserves and the National Guard while working as a volunteer at local veteran's centers, the Red Cross and teaching martial arts. William entered the Army in 2001 and arrived at Fort Campbell in October 2005. William served three tours of duty in Iraq and was currently a cavalry scout assigned to A Troop, 1st Battalion, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He died in the Jaji District, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when his unit was ambushed by small arms fire, serving his first tour of duty there. His awards and decorations include: Army Commendation Medal; Joint Meritorious Unit Award; Valorous Unit Award; Meritorious Unit Commendation; Army Good Conduct Medal; Navy Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Service Star; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Iraqi Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; NCO Professional Development Ribbon; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Navy/Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon; Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; Kuwait Liberation Medal; Combat Acton Badge; Air Assault Badge and Weapons Qualification, 9 mm pistol, expert.
