Death of Grandma Parkhurst
Mrs. Samuel Parkhurst, died yesterday at her home on North Penn avenue, aged 85 years, the cause of her death being cancer of the mouth. The funeral took place this morning at 10 o'clock from the house, services being conducted by Rev. J.D. Smith of the Methodist church.
Mrs. Parkhurst was one of the pioneer women of southern Kansas coming to Independence with her husband when Independence was a bunch of haythatched hamlets.
She leaves a husband and three daughters, Mrs. R.H. DeMott, Mrs. Mary E. Utterback, and Mrs. Lewis Hudiburg. A fourth daughter, Mrs. Caroline Smith, preceded the mother to the grave by several months.
"Grandma" Parkhurst has been a true Christian mother and leaves a host of friends and neighbors to mourn her death.
