Elias Irvin Smith, 88, died Nov 5, 1984 in Salt Lake City at the Veterans' Hospital of diabetes.
Funeral services were held at the Osmond LDS Church on Friday, Nov 9, with burial in the Fairview Cemetery.
Elias was born Dec 9, 1895 at Fairview to Elias Smith and Susan Matilda McLatchie. He was the third child in a family of nine children which included on brother and seven sisters.
He worked on the family's ranch in Fairview even after the family moved to Afton. He was always proud of the fact that as a small boy of seven years he did his part in building the stake tabernacle in Afton by carrying rocks from the rock pile to the stone cutters.
Elias' first schooling was in Fairview then in Afton where he attended three years of high school when it was first started there.
He worked for the forest service for three years until inducted into the Army where he served in World War I in the medical core. He was on board a ship headed for Siberia when peace was declared so he did not get into actual combat.
After discharged from the Army in 1919, he worked again as a forest ranger for nine years of which time he worked in Yellowstone National Park building roads and trails. He worked for the Wyoming Fish and Game Commission for 20 years where he trapped predatory animals in the Greys River and Cokeville areas. He then obtained various jobs close to home to care for his mother and sister Viola, who were in poor health. For several years he served as a guide for hunting outfitters.
He never married but took special interest in his family and was considered a "favorite uncle" by many nieces and nephews.
Elias enjoyed an outdoors sort of life until the last few years when sugar diabetes was discovered and which became the principal cause of his death.
Elias is survived by two sisters, Edna Beckdolt of Vale, Ore. and Irene Bassett of Afton.
