Johann Daniel Reinhold Witzke, son of August and Julianna (Knopf) Witzke. John was born in the Posen Province of today's Poland; attended college in Bromberg and Teacher's College in Marienburg, Germany; was a teacher in Germany for 20 years; moved to America in 1882; and was ordained on 11 June 1888.

He served as pastor in a number of Wisconsin and Minnesota congregations of the German Evang. Synod of North America; St Lucas being his last parish in 1902-03. He married Adolphine Lenz ca. 1866; she is reported to be buried in the German Evangelical Cemetery, Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

Their son Hans Baldwin Witzke also served as pastor in the Synod throughout Minnesota and Montana.

John Witzke is the brother of Gustave Witzke who last lived in Hammond, Wabasha County, Minnesota and is buried in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Congregation Cemetery near Bremen, Zumbro Township, Wabasha County, Minnesota.
