John W Brickley served in the civil war.
In 1863, he married Mary H. House in Olin, Iowa. They had 10 children.

John was a Civil War veteran. In a publication found in the Iowa Historical Building entitled "List of Officers of the Navy of the United States and of the Marine Corps from 1775 to 1900", comprising a complete register of all present and former commissioned, warranted, and appointed officers of the United States Navy, and of the Marine Corps, Regular and Volunteer, compiled from the Official Records of the Navy Department, edited by Edward W. Callahan, Registrar, Bureau of Navigation, Navy Department" , published by L.R. Hamersley & Co., 1901, #25863, the following was found: "Brickley, John, Acting Third Assistant Engineer, 21 September, 1863. Resigned 18 January, 1864."

The following is from the obituary of John:

"He with three sisters came to Iowa in 1856 by horse and wagon. His parents came latter and all settled
at Walnut Fork (Olin), latter moving to Jackson County, where the parents had purchased a farm. He married Mary House July 13, 1863. They set up housekeeping with the bride's parents and lived with them until Mr. and Mrs. House passed away. In 1896 he purchased a home in Olin where they resided many years. They were the parents of ten children; five of them preceded him in death. After his wifes death in 1921, he went to live with his youngest daughter, Jennie, at Marion, Iowa, staying there until March, 192?, when he came to live with his daughter, Lulu, Mrs. George Purcell, where he died."

John was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church.

A death certificate lists the cause of death as apoplexy. He is buried in the Olin Cemetery, Olin, Iowa. Mary Ellen Jochim has a copy of his obituary.

The following is an excerpt from a letter written by Myrtle (Brickley) McMurrin:

"John and Mary married when very young and both came from the East. I believe Maryland or Pa. They staked out several acres of land (Iowa) and when the boys (Jeremiah and Edwin) married they were each given 40acres to build a homestead and begin their married lives. I remember mother telling how they lived with Grandma and Grandpa B. (I believe this is a mistake, as they lived with the House family) while neighbors and friends helped them build their house, barn, etc. And how they had no shade trees, so they had to wash always in summer in the shade of the house. And the house was built right over cornstalks. We were all born in that house and it is still standing but in bad shape. I recall Dad adding acreage to the 40 acres, until we had 100 acres. That was a big farm." (The children born in the house were those of Jeremiah and Delilah).

During the Brickley Family Reunion of 1993, Stacy (Jochim) Becker visited that house, climbing the unstable stairs, and took pictures.

John died at the age of 92 Y's 4 M's 14 D's. The death certificate was signed by J.D.Paul, M.D. on July 27, 1933.

J.W. Brickley is listed as a supervisor for Jackson Township for 1875, 1878, and 1890. He is also listed as a constable for 1881.
