OSCAR MILES SIMS, JR.

Oscar Miles Sims Jr., 68, passed away Thursday September 25th, 2008, at his home, after a year and a half long battle with lung cancer.

Family visitation will be 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday September 28th, 2008 at Johnsons Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday September 29th, 2008 in the chapel at Johnsons Funeral Home with Forrest Sims officiating. Military burial will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

Oscar was born May 20, 1940, to Oscar and Ida Sims in Sweetwater, Texas. In 1962 he enlisted in the United States Navy where he proudly served his country for 20 years and 3 months. He served on numerous ships such as the USS Sellers, USS Donald B. Beary, USS Mattaponi, USS Diamond Head, and USS Lawrence. He sailed around the world. He crossed both the equator and the arctic circle. While on a tour in Vietnam he was awarded the bronze star of valor.

In 1990 he met the love of his life and best friend, Theresa. On September 2, 1995 they were married at their home in San Angelo. Oscar was a devoted husband. His family and friends were very special to him. He loved to play golf with his buddies at Santa Fe, fish and to spend time outdoors. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He had a kind heart and a tender spirit. No one enjoyed life more than Oscar. He faced difficulty, loss, and disappointment, but he always managed to maintain a positive outlook. He was always happy and he never let the small things get him down. Even throughout his battle with cancer, he remained the same kind and loving man he had always been.

Oscar is survived by his loving wife, Theresa of San Angelo; sons Gregory Sims of the Dallas area, Wes Wolfe and wife Christie of San Angelo; daughters Donna Jo Sims of Sterling, CO, Dawn Trevino and husband Adam of San Angelo; his brothers Forrest Sims and his wife Lucretia of Sweetwater, JD Sims and his wife Patsy of Pace, FL; 4 grandsons; 6 granddaughters; many nieces and nephews; and countless friends. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents Oscar M. Sims Sr. and Ida Sims.

Pallbearers will be members of the United States Air Force from Goodfellow Air Force Base.
