Retired Navy Cmdr. Hugh Barr "Buddy" Rardin, 84, of Annapolis and Duck, N.C., died of complications from emphysema Dec. 8 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a three-month illness.

Cmdr. Rardin was born May 18, 1923, in Huntington, W. Va. to the late P.B. and Norma Elizabeth Rardin.

He attended Culver Military Academy, Marshall University, and Ohio State University, and graduated in 1948 from the Naval Academy.

Cmdr. Rardin served on active duty for 12 years, including during the Korean War, and at one point was commanding officer of PCE 890. He continued to serve in the Naval Reserve for 15 years.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis and Duck United Methodist Church, the National Rifle Association, the Annapolitan Club, and was a life-member of the Annapolis Yacht Club. He was a board member of the Henry L. Doherty Foundation, and a general partner in the Tolten LTD. Partnership.

He enjoyed trapshooting, reading, playing poker, traveling, the "Donut Shack Boys," and sports.

Survivors include his wife since 1957, Carolyn Whittaker Rardin; one son, Hugh Whittaker Rardin of Southern Shores, N.C.; one daughter, LuAnn Barr Rardin-Masterson of Chesapeake, Va.; one sister, Bettie Lee Combs of Austell, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
