Curtis Havens, Sr. was a farmer, fish peddler and stage coach inn keeper located at 521 Herbertsville Road, Herbertsville, Monmouth County, New Jersey, from c1827. In (1850), Ocean County, New Jersey was founded. In February 15, 1850, Brick Twp. was Founded by an Act of Legislation. The farm house is currently a museum owned and operated by the Brick Township Historical Society. They acquired the Havens Homestead due to a Donation from: Elmer Ellison and Gertrude May Havens.
Curtis was first married on Feb. 23, 1826 to Elizabeth Tilton and they had nine children (Joseph Tilton, James Riley Tilton, John, Mary, Margaret, Thomas, Aaron, Joice and Elizabeth Havens). Elizabeth died on Sept. 10, 1841 after giving birth to her 10th child, and is buried with her baby. Curtis next married on Sept. 9, 1844, Hannah H. Matthews Sherman, a widow with six children. Curtis and Hannah had seven children of their own (Charlotte Ann, Amy Jane, Joseph, Curtis, Jr., Charles C., Elwood and Newbold Havens).
