THE OHIO MESSENGER, CLEVELAND, OHIO JUNE, 1898 VOL. XI, NO 9

"Mrs. Margaret Marilla Farnsworth was born in Lorain County, Ohio, June 5th 1843. Her Father, Luman Griswold, was a grandson of one of three brothers who came over from Scotland and setted in the Green Mountains of Vermont. Her mother, Margaret Smith, was of English descent. "Her father died when she was but little past two years old, leaving to her mother a large family of little ones to care for, etc.
(This is a long article....only partial is here).
//////////
Margaret married Charles Henry Farnsworth the son of Oliver & Edna Farnsworth (my 2nd great-grandparents) of Defiance County,OH 24 Dec 1861. They had one little girl who was born in 1862/63 and died as an infant. Charles died in 1863 in the Civil War.
Margaret remarried several years later to her husbands brother Frank or Frances Oliver Farnsworth 1 Jan 1867 and they had 47 years together and three children.
Margaret was a teacher, a writer,a leader in her community and was widely known.

"She made her first speech for "Woman's Rights" when she was but fifteen years old. At that time, when Woman Suffrage was much less talked about than now, it took no little courage for a young girl to stand up advocate a movement so unpopular, or to defend such bold, bad women as were Lucy Stone and Susan B. Anthony. She has always advocated equal wages for equal labor, and thinks if a man is stronger and has, as he assumes greater mental ability, he should seek to protect and not to assail woman's virtue."

"She has had her sorrows, privations, self-denials, hardships and conflicts, yet she has never shrunk from the trials and difficulties of life, but all through the years of conflict, she has ever maintained a cheerful spirit, and set forth the lesson that industry, patience and perseverance will "Win the crown."
