James Harvey Bowman passed away in Springfield, Oh, where he had been making his home in that city with a son, Paul E. Bowman, and had been in poor health for several months.
In the early 1860's, Mr. Bowman attended Ohio Wesleyan University at Delaware, Ohio, and went on to teach in public education in Allen and Putnam Counties.
On September 11, 1873, Mr. Bowman married Lucinda Reed at Dunkirk, Ohio, who preceded him in death. They were the parents of four children.
In 1876 Mr. Bowman purchased the Bellefontaine Press, a weekly paper, and changed the name to "The Index". In 1879, he sold a half interest in the business to W.S. Roebuck and the two were associated together until 1885, when Mr. Bowman sold his interest to J. C. Brand. He subsequently moved his family to Chatanooga, Tennessee, to address the health needs of Mrs. Bowman, who suffered with asthma.
After leaving Bellefontaine, he was engaged in the newspaper and printing business at different places, his last active work in the line having been a job printing plant at Lima, Ohio.
A member of the Methodist church for many years, his life and business career was always one that was above reproach.
He was the father of four children: Paul Ernest. Bowman (1874-1961)
Lena May Bowman (1879-1887)
Florence Hope Bowman Bennett Beard (1886-1976)
Maude Edna Bowman Patton (1889-1973)
