The 1930 census revealed David was a laborer at a golf club and they rented their home for $8 per month in Cedar Creek, Bath County, Virginia. He could not read or write. They and their parents were all born in Virginia. David was twenty and Pearl was twenty-two when they married. Household members: David H. Carter (28), Pearl M. (30) and Sadie H. (2 5/12).

The 1940 census revealed David was a salary farm laborer, worked thirty-six weeks and earned $315 in 1939. They rented their home for $4 per month and still lived on North of Route 220 as in 1935. David had a third grade education and Pearl had a sixth grade education. Household members: Dave H. Carter (34), Pearl (39), Sadie (12), Evelyn (10), David (5) and Phyllis (1).

{{DAVID CARTER - WARM SPRINGS - David Houston Carter, 83, OF Warm Springs, died Wednesday in Bath County Community Hospital.

He was born June 18, 1905 in Rockbridge County, a son of the late Harry Lewis and Sallie Potter Carter.

Mr. Carter was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder-Day Saints and was retired from the homestead.

He was survived by his wife, Pearl Carter of Warm Springs; two sons, David E. Carter of Billings, Mont., and James R. Carter of Gastonia, N. C.; three daughters, Sadie A. Pritt, Evelyn D. Crizer, both of Bacova, and Phillis J. Bryant of Warm Springs; one sister, Nancy Shinauit of Lexington; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Carter is preceded in death by six sisters and two brothers.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 pm in the chapel of McLaughlin Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth James officiating.

Interment will be in Warm Springs Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be David Stone, James Crizer Jr., Dana Pritt, Timmy Dunnagan, Terry Pritt, Jerry Crizer, Ronnie Dunnagan, Mark Carter, Steven Crizer and Kirk Carter.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 till 8 pm at McLaughlin Funeral Home.}}
