Graveside services for Ellis Kenneth Barnes , 75, Trinidad, are scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Malakoff cemetery with the Rev. Floyd Loven officiating under the direction of Anderson-Clayton Bro's. Funeral home, Kemp. Mr. Barnes died Dec. 4 at his residence. He was born Nov. 12, 1922, in Wills Point, Tx. to the late Eugene Claude and Flo Ellis Barnes, living in Trinidad for 25 yrs.
Kenneth was a WWII Navy Veteran and survived the attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. Kenneth was on the USS Maryland (BB-46), also known as "Old Mary" or "Fighting Mary" to her crewmates, a Colorado-class battleship during the bombing. The Maryland was present on Battleship Row during the Attack on Pearl Harbor, and was lightly damaged by Japanese bombs. Kenneth remained on the Battleship Maryland which
saw service in the Pacific War, first supporting the rest of the fleet at the Battle of Midway, and then patrolling the Fiji Islands to guard against Japanese incursion. Next, she went on the offensive, commencing shore bombardments in the Battle of Tarawa and later in the Battle of Kwajalein. During the Battle of Saipan she took torpedo damage to her bow, necessitating repairs and refits. She then participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf where she was hit by a kamikaze. She took another kamikaze hit at the Battle of Okinawa, and was under repair at the end of World War II. Kenneth remained on the battleship Maryland until the end of WWII.
