Edgar married Clara May Parks in 1891 in DeSoto, Texas. He was a successful farmer. Immediately after their marriage, he farmed his property in north Ellis County near Red Oak, Texas.

Clara May died as a result of lingering complications from the birth of, Fred, her fourth child. Her first child lived three days. Shortly after their mother's death, Orla and Nathe moved with their father to Illinois to be near Edgar's family.

Fred stayed with his mother's parents (T.J. and Texana Parks) in DeSoto and grew up in their house, never returning to his father's home to live. Fred's brothers grew up in Illinois, but returned to Texas after finishing high school in Illinois.

Edgar's second wife was Myrtle Blanche Robbins. They had one child, Gladys Fae Bagby Simmons.
