John L. Sullivan, 68, of 915 Thomas Place, died Wednesday, September 24, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a parish scripture wake service at 5:30 p.m.

He was born on Dec. 27, 1939, in Dubuque, son of Leo and Margaret (Fortman) Sullivan. He graduated from Nativity grade school and Dubuque Senior High School.

John enlisted in the Navy in 1959 and served for three years. He married Rachel Fosello on April 28, 1963, in Jersey City, N.J. The two moved back to Dubuque where John became a self-employed contractor until going to work for Heavy Lift Iron Workers.

He was a member of the Iron Workers Local 89 for many years.

John enjoyed the outdoors and keeping busy all the time. He loved the ocean, fishing and yearly visits to the monastery. He prayed to Padre Pio every day.

John's family is very proud of him, his will to live and his generosity to all. He was a constant fighter who never gave up. As much as the family did not want to see him go, the Lord Jesus Christ has called him to help watch over all of us. He is now in heaven with his children, Phillip and Michelle and family members, waiting for us to come and join them. John believed in Jesus Christ. He opened the door and his heart and welcomed inside the Lord Jesus Christ and accepted him. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Surviving are his wife, Rachel, of Dubuque; his children, Deborah (Vinnie) DeVenuta and Leo J. Sullivan, both of Dubuque, and Jonathan Sullivan; his grandchildren, Alysse M. and Brittany R. DeVenuta and Justin J. Sullivan; siblings, Mickey (Rita) Sullivan, Dr. Samuel (Lavonne) Sullivan and Judy (Edward) Esser, all of Dubuque, Gene Sullivan, of El Paso, Texas, and Donna "Ginger" (Richard) Bower and Sandra (Dr. Gary) Grover, both of Phoenix; father-in-law; Felix Fosello; brother-in-law, Dave Rezab, of Phoenix; sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Gene) Naughton, Florence (Scott Cooper) Fosello, Marie Fosello and Barbara (Keith) Cole; his godchildren, Jefferey Fosello, Patsy Sullivan Betts and Jeffery Kovach; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two children, Phillip and Michelle; three sisters, Ruth, in infancy, Joyce Kovach and Sue Rezab; a brother, Patrick, in infancy; a mother-in-law, Florence Fosello; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Sullivan; and a brother-in-law, Steven Kovach.
